If you have applied for an e-Shram card, the next steps are usually to check whether your registration is complete, sign in with your UAN and download the card. If you are exploring the pension mentioned in connection with e-Shram, it is important to know that registration on the e-Shram portal does not by itself enrol you in a pension scheme.

This guide explains the main e-Shram services, who can register, what you need, how to access your card and where the Pradhan Mantri Shram Yogi Maan-dhan (PM-SYM) pension fits in.

What is the e-Shram card?

e-Shram is the Government of India’s national database for unorganised workers. A worker who registers receives a Universal Account Number (UAN), a 12-digit identification number, and can access their e-Shram card through the portal.

The card is proof of registration in the e-Shram database. It is not, by itself, an approval for a cash benefit, insurance payment or pension. Eligibility for any separate government scheme is decided under that scheme’s own rules.

Who can register for e-Shram?

e-Shram registration is intended for eligible unorganised workers. In general, the worker must be aged 16 to 59 and should not be an income-tax payer or a member of the Employees’ Provident Fund Organisation (EPFO), Employees’ State Insurance Corporation (ESIC) or the National Pension System (NPS) for government-funded employees. Check the portal’s current eligibility guidance if your circumstances are unusual or have changed.

Workers in occupations such as domestic work, construction, agriculture, street vending, transport and other informal work may fall within the unorganised-worker category, subject to the applicable conditions. Registration does not guarantee access to every scheme listed or promoted elsewhere.

Information to keep ready before applying

Item Why it is needed
Aadhaar number Used to identify the worker during registration.
Mobile number linked to Aadhaar May be needed for authentication and one-time-password verification during self-registration.
Bank account details, including account number and IFSC Used to record the worker’s bank information in the registration profile.
Personal and work details Keep details such as date of birth, address, occupation and education information accurate and consistent with your records.

If your mobile number is not linked to Aadhaar or you cannot complete online authentication, ask a CSC about assisted registration. Do not share an OTP or banking credentials with an unofficial agent.

How to apply for an e-Shram card online

Step What to do Check before moving on
1. Open the official service Go to the e-Shram self-registration page. Confirm that the address is on the official government domain.
2. Enter your details Provide the information requested, including your Aadhaar-linked mobile number, and complete the on-screen verification. Use your own details. Make sure your name and date of birth are entered correctly.
3. Complete the registration form Enter the requested personal, address, occupation and bank details. Check the account number and IFSC carefully before submitting.
4. Review and submit Read the information shown on the form, correct errors and submit the application. Keep any confirmation or UAN details displayed after successful submission.
5. Sign in and access the card Use the UAN login page to open your account and look for the card or download option. Save the downloaded card securely and check that the printed details are legible.

Online screens and available options can change. Follow the instructions currently displayed on the official portal rather than relying on screenshots or third-party forms.

How to check e-Shram application status

Use the official UAN login service to check your account and registration information. Follow the authentication steps shown on screen. If registration has been completed and a UAN was issued, use that UAN and the requested verification details to access your profile.

If you submitted a form but cannot find a UAN or card, do not immediately submit another application. First check whether you received a completion message, whether the mobile number used is correct, and whether the portal accepts your login details. If the issue remains, seek help through an official CSC or the e-Shram portal.

How to download or print your e-Shram card

  1. Open the official UAN login page and sign in using the details requested.
  2. Open your worker profile and check that the name and other details are correct.
  3. Select the card or download option available in your account.
  4. Save the file to a device you control, then print it if you need a paper copy.

If the download option is not visible, check whether registration is complete and try again after signing in through the official portal. Avoid downloading a card from an unofficial website or giving another person control of your account.

e-Shram login and profile updates

The login service is for accessing an existing e-Shram account; it is not the same as starting a new registration. Use the official UAN login page and follow the verification instructions shown there.

Review your profile for errors, particularly in your name, contact information, occupation and bank details. If information needs correction, use the update facility available after login or follow the portal’s current instructions. Never alter details to claim a benefit for which you are not eligible.

Does an e-Shram card provide a ₹3,000 pension?

No. An e-Shram card does not automatically pay a monthly pension. The ₹3,000 monthly pension commonly associated with unorganised workers is the benefit under Pradhan Mantri Shram Yogi Maan-dhan (PM-SYM), a separate voluntary and contributory pension scheme. A person must enrol in PM-SYM and meet its eligibility conditions; having an e-Shram card alone is not enrolment.

PM-SYM point General rule
Who the scheme is for Eligible unorganised workers within the scheme’s prescribed age and income limits.
Entry age 18 to 40 years at the time of joining.
Income condition Monthly income must be ₹15,000 or less.
Who is generally excluded Those covered by EPFO, ESIC or the National Pension System (NPS), and income-tax payers, are generally not eligible.
Contribution and pension The subscriber makes a monthly contribution based on age at entry, with a matching contribution by the Central Government under the scheme. The assured pension is ₹3,000 per month after attaining 60 years, subject to scheme rules and continued compliance.

Before enrolling, confirm the current contribution and scheme conditions through an authorised PM-SYM enrolment channel or CSC. Do not treat an e-Shram registration confirmation as proof that PM-SYM contributions have started.

Common problems and what to check

Problem What to try
OTP does not arrive Check that the mobile number is active and linked to Aadhaar, wait before requesting another OTP, and follow the portal’s displayed guidance. For assisted service, ask a CSC.
UAN login does not work Recheck the UAN and the information requested for verification. Use the official login page and avoid sharing authentication codes with anyone.
Application appears incomplete Look for a submission confirmation or UAN. If neither is available, contact an official CSC or use the e-Shram portal for current assistance rather than creating duplicate registrations.
Details on the card are wrong Sign in and check whether the profile update option is available. Correct the record using the portal’s instructions before relying on the card as proof of your details.
Card will not download Confirm that registration is complete, try again after signing in, and check whether the browser is blocking the download. Use only the official portal.
Expected a pension after e-Shram registration Check whether you separately enrolled in PM-SYM and whether contributions are being made. e-Shram registration alone does not create a pension entitlement.

Important limits to remember

  • e-Shram registration is not the same as approval for a government benefit.
  • The e-Shram card does not automatically enrol a worker in PM-SYM or guarantee a ₹3,000 pension.
  • Eligibility for insurance, pension or other assistance is determined by the rules of the relevant scheme.
  • Use official government portals or authorised service channels. Do not pay an unofficial person or disclose OTPs, passwords or banking PINs.

Frequently Asked Questions

How can I check my e-Shram card status?

Open the official UAN login page, complete the verification requested and check your account or registration details. If you do not have a UAN, check for a submission confirmation or seek help through an official CSC.

How do I download my e-Shram card?

Sign in through the official UAN login service, open your profile and select the card or download option available there. Download only from the official portal.

Is e-Shram registration free?

Use the government’s official registration portal or ask an authorised CSC about assisted service and any applicable service information. Be cautious of unofficial websites or agents claiming to sell an e-Shram card.

Who can apply for an e-Shram card?

Broadly, eligible unorganised workers aged 16 to 59 may register, subject to exclusions such as income-tax payer status and membership of specified social-security or pension schemes. Check the official portal for the current rules that apply to you.

Does an e-Shram card give a ₹3,000 monthly pension?

No. The ₹3,000 monthly pension is associated with PM-SYM, which is a separate contributory scheme. You must meet its conditions and enrol separately; the e-Shram card alone does not provide the pension.

Can I apply for PM-SYM if I already have an e-Shram card?

An e-Shram card does not itself decide PM-SYM eligibility. PM-SYM has its own age, income and exclusion conditions, and requires separate enrolment. Confirm your eligibility and contribution details through an authorised enrolment channel.

What should I do if my Aadhaar-linked mobile number is unavailable?

Self-registration may require mobile authentication. Ask a CSC about assisted registration and follow the official process; do not give an OTP or Aadhaar credentials to an unauthorised person.

Does an e-Shram card need annual renewal?

Do not assume that the card must be renewed every year. Sign in to the official portal to keep your information accurate and follow any current instructions or updates issued there.
